Liposuction: What’s Involved?

Liposuction, often referred to as lipoplasty or just lipo, is a surgical procedure that breaks down the fat in your body, and sucks it out. Generally, this is performed on the tummy, buttocks, thighs and backs. In some cases, liposuction may also be used for the arms and neck. During the process, excess fat is extracted from the boy through a cannula, which operates using high pressure vacuum.

Liposuction is not a weight loss method, and is only meant for removing undesirable fat deposits from the body. Hence, it has no affect on dimples, stretch mark or cellulite. However, it does improve the aesthetic appearance of the body.

Targeted Areas

  • Abs and flanks
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs and inner knees
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Upper arms neck lines

Preferred Candidates

The best candidates for liposuction are those who have an elastic skin and skin consistent skin tone; their skin should be able to mould itself into their new shape. If the skin is loosely elastic, it may sag in areas where the liposuction surgery is carried out.

Other requirements include good health, a strong immune system and 18 years of age.

The Procedure

Liposuction surgery lasts for around 1 to 4 hours. The patient may be given general or local anesthesia depending on the area of targeted body parts. Liposuction can be performed through several techniques such as tumescent liposuction, dry liposuction or ultrasound or laser assisted liposuction.

When the procedure is completed, the patient is bandaged over the targeted areas. Antibiotics or pain killers may be prescribed. Stitches are removed during a subsequent appointment. Results appear in around 4 weeks after swelling is reduced.
